5 Cybersecurity Mistakes Kansas Farm Operations Make (And How to Fix Them)

Farming has always been a long-game business. You plant in spring because you trust the fall will come. You maintain equipment because breakdowns at harvest cost more than the repair.
Cybersecurity works the same way. The problem is most farm operations in rural Kansas are not maintaining it. And the attacks are not going to wait for a convenient time.
This is not meant to scare you. It is meant to give you something useful: five specific mistakes we see regularly, and exactly what to do about each one.
Mistake 1: Using Default or Shared Passwords on Farm Software and Equipment
The grain management software your elevator runs. The precision ag platform your agronomist uses. The router in the office you installed three years ago. A majority of these are still running the password they shipped with, or a password like “Harvest2022” that six people know.
Default and shared passwords are one of the top entry points for ransomware attacks on agricultural businesses. Attackers use automated tools that try known default credentials across thousands of IP addresses every day. If your equipment or software is connected to the internet, it is being scanned right now.
The fix: Audit every device and software account that matters to your operation. Change any default password immediately. Use a unique password for each account and store them in a password manager. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on any platform that supports it, especially precision ag tools like John Deere Operations Center, Climate FieldView, and any cloud-based accounting software.
This takes an afternoon. It is one of the highest-return security steps you can take.
Mistake 2: No Offsite Backup for Farm Records and Precision Ag Data
If a ransomware attack hits your operation, attackers will encrypt your files and demand payment to restore them. Ransomware demands against small businesses vary widely, and the amount is only part of the damage. Downtime during planting or harvest, lost records, and the scramble to recover often cost far more than the demand itself.
Paying does not guarantee you get your data back. And your data includes field records, soil maps, yield history, custom chemical applications, customer and vendor contracts, and financial records.
Most farm operations we visit have no backup at all, or a backup that hasn’t been tested in two years.
The fix: Set up automated offsite backups for every system that holds data you cannot recreate. Backups should run daily, store at least 30 days of history, and be kept somewhere physically separate from your office. Cloud backup is practical and affordable. A managed IT provider can set this up and monitor it so you are not doing it manually. Test your restore process at least once a year.
If you can restore from backup, ransomware is a nuisance. If you cannot, it is a crisis.
Mistake 3: Mixing Farm Equipment and Office Systems on the Same Network
Your office computers, your point-of-sale system, and your connected field equipment probably share the same Wi-Fi network right now. That is a problem.
Modern farm operations use a lot of connected devices: GPS-guided equipment, telematics systems, environmental sensors, irrigation controllers, and precision ag platforms. Each of those devices is a potential entry point. If an attacker compromises one device on a flat network, they can move laterally to every other device on that same network, including your accounting software and employee records.
This is called an unprotected network topology, and it is standard practice at most rural operations because nobody told them otherwise.
The fix: Separate your networks. Put office computers and critical business systems on one network. Put connected farm equipment and IoT devices on a separate, isolated VLAN or guest network. This does not mean buying a ton of new equipment. A managed network setup can do this with the right configuration on gear you may already have. The goal is to contain a breach if one happens. One compromised tractor sensor should not hand an attacker access to your payroll records.
Mistake 4: Running Unpatched or Outdated Software Going Into Harvest
Software updates are easy to defer. When you’re in the middle of planting or managing crop inputs, stopping to restart a computer for updates feels like wasted time.
The problem is that software vulnerabilities are publicly documented the moment a patch is released. Attackers scan for systems still running the unpatched version and exploit them within days, sometimes within hours. Running a 60-day-old patch cycle during the busiest season of your year means your systems are known to be vulnerable.
The 2021 JBS Foods ransomware attack, which disrupted a significant portion of US beef processing, was linked to outdated software on critical systems. Scale that down to a Kansas grain elevator or a regional co-op and the impact is proportionally just as severe.
The fix: Automate updates on every system you can. For anything that cannot be automated, schedule a monthly maintenance window. Mistake 5: No Plan for What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
This is the most common and most costly mistake.
When a ransomware attack hits or a critical system goes down, the first 30 minutes matter more than anything else. Businesses that have a written incident response plan, even a simple one, recover faster and spend significantly less. Businesses that don’t have a plan spend that first 30 minutes figuring out who to call.
The real cost of an incident is rarely just the ransom or the repair bill. It shows up as lost production during your busiest weeks, employee time spent scrambling, customer and vendor disruption, and equipment or data you cannot easily replace. Operations that respond without a plan almost always spend more time and money recovering than those that prepared one in advance.
The fix: Write down a one-page plan. It should include: who to call first, how to isolate affected systems, whether you have a backup and where it is, and what your insurance covers. A local, trusted IT partner should be on that list as the first call. Rural operations need someone who can be on-site, not just remote.
If you don’t have that plan or that partner, that is a gap worth closing before harvest.
The Bottom Line
None of these fixes require a huge budget or a full-time IT staff. They require a few hours of attention and, in most cases, a trusted local partner who knows agricultural operations.
